While others have their Winter holidays, I took some time off school and (will definitely be in trouble later) flew to Berlin with Nora. We have been taking easy, going to magnificent parties, seeing exhibitions (I'll probably write about everything later).

Breaking news: I got my first Polaroid camera for nothing at the open air flee market and today, week after the camera, I found Polaroid 600 of the Impossible Project straight off the counter of the c/o Berlin book shop. The Impossible film is trickier than the old polaroid film used to be but after one failure, I got sort-of-visible self portrait out of the camera. So it works. New era has begun!

Only functionable digital device is Nora's photobooth, so.... The mask I'm wearing is a prop for a party in KitKat club, but as in all the best places in Berlin, photography is not allowed, so there are no actual photos of any parties. And all the photos are on film anyway, so it takes some time to get them developed.

Ladidaa. I just feel so happy and thankful (and tired) at the moment.

Little documentary about printing and bookbinding.

I'm mostly spending my time (days and nights) in this classroom dealing with these miniature letters and the letterpress machine. To print a text you need to find letters one by one from their boxes and place them correctly (upside down and vertically flipped, b looks like d, d looks like b et cetera), then you have to place it on the machine, spill some ink over it and hope the outcome is desired. (Sometimes I hope it would function like that, but really it takes couple of attempts to get the pressure and the amount of ink right.) When you are done printing, you have to clean the letters and sort them back to their boxes, carefully so that you will find them next time you need them. 30 pages of this! (20+ prints/page) Sometimes I think it's slightly insane.

Lähes huijaamatta, istun ympärivuorokautisesti kirjanladontaluokassa musteiden ja pienten metallikirjasimien kanssa tehden kandiani. Koko prosessiin menee aika valtavasti aikaa, mutta lopputuloksesta näyttäisi tulevan aika mässy. Fonttikoko on 6 (sama kokoasteikko kuin tekstinkäsittelyohjelmissa, jossa times new roman 12 on se basicfontti. Eli puolet pienempi. Yay!), ei helpota, eikä nopeuta hommaa lainkaan.

Kun oon niin innostunut tästä painohommasta, oon ehtinyt jo unohtaa senkin, että tosiaan, tähän prosessiin kuuluu myös sisällöntuontato-osuus. Välillä onni potkii, kun sisältö on pudonnut päästä ulos miltei itsestään.

(Kirjasinten nurinperisyys on aiheuttanut myös innostuksen opetella kirjoittamaan käsin nurinperin. Siitä myöhemmin.)

No much new photography to show except 1000 unscanned frames of film. Don't yet know what to use them for.

When I applied to this school, it was called University of Art and Design Helsinki. In Finnish Taideteollinen korkeakoulu, which means roughly the same.

There has been some major changes in the University policies and it led to combining our school with University of Economics and University of Technology from 2010 onward. The new university is called Aalto University (aalto meaning wave). People behind these combinations have high hopes and noble ideas but the reality turned out to be quite different (at least for now, in the beginning). Some changes are made just for the sake of changing. As the Department of Architecture is about to become part of our university (it has been part of the University of Technology) authorities decided our school needs a new name. The University of Art and Design has gone through renaming before from Sculpture School to Central School of Art and Design etc.

Now they have figured out our name should be...

Aalto University School of Arts and Creativity
(translates from Finnish Aalto yliopiston Taiteen ja Suunnittelun koulu, suunnittelu meaning rather planning than design or creativity.)

Appalling. :(

So, please, spread link to this petition to reconsider the name of the school as much as possible.

These photos are by the Dam Style who noticed my braided and slept on hair while we were at a big flee market called Noordermarkt.

We had a whole week of sunshine and warmth, people said it was the first week like that. Went to places on foot and photograped mostly other things but people. The films have to be developed, that should be interesting.

This tour had such a huge impact on so many things I can't even recall them all.

I've been quite busy lately. Nothing to make a fuss about though. Yet. Bit of playing around in studio and lots of sewing. I'm really aiming to wear mostly self-made clothes. Mostly people don't even realize they are not bought from shops. One day I'll hopefully have my own collection, if people want to wear the kind of clothes I do, that is. It's not easy doing these things alone. But then, nothing is.

Now it's time to make a scarf and a winter coat and then we're off to Amsterdam.

Seisoin päälläni ensimmäistä kertaa tässä elämässä.

Hyvin monissa elämän tilanteissa tuntuu, että päälläseisonta on ainoa keino saada viesti perille. Jos nyt ei omalla päällään, niin vähintään sen tahon päällä, jolle yrittää viestiä välittää. Koska olen elänyt siinä harhaluulossa, että pääni keskellä oleva patti estää pääni käytön päälläseisontatarkoituksiin, olen pitänyt muiden päällä seisomista ainoana vaihtoehtona, ja se taas on menettelymuotona sen verran epäkohteliasta, etten ole tohtinut tehdä niin. Tämä johtaa pattitilanteisiin, joissa ei voi tehdä yhtikäs mitään. Nyt kuitenkin ymmärrettyäni, että patti tilanteessa tai ilman ei estä päälläseisontaa, aion harjoitella sitä aktiivisesti saavuttaakseni missä tahansa vapaasti käytettävän päälläseisontataidon. Eikä tähänkään mennyt kuin kaksitoista epäonnista päälläseisonnan vuotta, joista neljä ovat sisältäneet aktiivista päälläseisonnan pohdintaa. Pohdinta on tuottanut mitä mainioimmat tulokset. Vinkiksi muille päälläseisonnan kanssa pahkaileville: Älkää seisoko sen patin päällä, muuttakaa kulmaa, tai näkökulmaa, niin kyllä se sitten alkaa luonnistua.

I've found out there is a genre of Sun-glass -accidents:
1. Leaving glasses on for too long and getting panda-tans or nose-burns
2. Mislaying of glasses that causes either a headache or an economical loss, or both
3. Breakage of glasses by sitting on them, walking on them or running over them by a car or a lorry
4. Not-being-able-to-see-anything-because-the-shopping-mall-or-the-buss-or-the-metro-tunnel-is-not-as-bright-as-the-outside-world

My poor, crappy but very very dear machine. Serving well for its second year.

I think I should make a documentary on my sewing. I use no patterns of any kind and therefore make dozens of mistakes. I'm forced to sit on the floor looking like a puzzled frog because there's no desk. I think it could be worth seeing. OH! And mostly I can't see what I'm doing, because I like to sew at nights and my lights and lamps are even worse than my working position or the machine.

I have been drawing these dotty-things

for a month now. They might refer to

pointillism, digital pixels, film grain,

them feels highly reassuring.

Using dots to create lines and shapes gives

These photos are ones that I always return to. I have addressed them by couple of names, each name leading deeper into to the existing themes. It's a process that resembles tidal waves, remembering and forgetting them. Each wave brings new things ashore, like the ones people have lost or thrown off without a thought of someone somewhere finding them. I find not only myself attached to these two particular images. People tend to stop by and drift away for longer times. I know it's partly due to the aesthetics but also because of the confusion created by uncertainty if they are set up or real.

Things that are actually there represent the things that are not there anymore or the things that the world would do better without.

Usually it's hard to write about one's own work but with these I felt like it. There is always something to say. No photo goes into category i-just-took-it-it's-just-a-photo-don't-ask-me-i-don't-know. I'm just not so keen on explaining, the viewer can find his or her own ways of seeing each work. And most of my readers speak Finnish not English. Might try writing some other time too. Perhaps.

Boring is counted as a visual style, architecture represents not only architecture but people, landscapes photographed are the ones that are thought valuable for one reason or another, beautiful landscape needs not to be classical, humans' impact on the view cannot be hidden, but again,

Unreleased but not so new photos from on-going photo project with Mikko Keskiivari. Our method of working has developed to its current point during the years we've known each other. Shoots are never planned. Either of us just has something in mind, whether it is a place or a specific object we want to include in the shoot. Then, working with a self timer or a remote control, we place ourselves in front of the camera and see what happens. Content is created in our mutual action, the project exists only when there are two of us.
