First of all, sorry for being off the whole Summer. I just needed a break of constant photography and focused on reading and thinking about photography especially as art. There is now this larger body of work I'm developing slowly. It will have stills but also video where the main focus is on sounds and spoken stories. If anyone out there is interested in discussing sounds, I'd be pleased.

Some real photography I did at the beginning of the Summer. First of all the shoot with the most wonderful MUKA VA -team.

I'll be shooting polaroids and large format this Summer! Jee!!

The only photo of Berlin was a polaroid

The excitement of shooting film is in uncertainty.
I use only film when I travel. Digital equipment is too fragile and

valuable to take abroad, and it's too heavy to carry around. So finally
I had the films from Berlin developed. This time it was three rolls of
nothing. I just stood at the counter and after a little while started crying,
paid for the films and sat down on the nearest sofa to sob. I have never

had any film disasters before so it felt bad. And when I realized

it was because of my own stupidity it was even harder to bear.
It wasn't the security check machines that destroyed the films -

I just had forgotten to change the small battery in the bottom of the

camera. (The camera is from the 80's and it has a battery, it's really

hard to remember. A film camera with a battery!)

One day we went to an open air flee market and I bought a polaroid

camera, as some of you might remember. Then I ran across a pack

of Impossible film. It is not as simple to use as the old films and only

after two test shoots I got a decent picture out of the camera. (You

have to wait really long for the colour polaroids to develop, hours,

even a day.)

And this is the picture. It's flawed in several ways, but now when

all the other photos are gone, it's worth a lot. In fact, now when I
think of it, this is what Berlin felt like.

Little documentary about printing and bookbinding.

 

I'm mostly spending my time (days and nights) in this classroom dealing with these miniature letters and the letterpress machine. To print a text you need to find letters one by one from their boxes and place them correctly (upside down and vertically flipped, b looks like d, d looks like b et cetera), then you have to place it on the machine, spill some ink over it and hope the outcome is desired. (Sometimes I hope it would function like that, but really it takes couple of attempts to get the pressure and the amount of ink right.) When you are done printing, you have to clean the letters and sort them back to their boxes, carefully so that you will find them next time you need them. 30 pages of this! (20+ prints/page) Sometimes I think it's slightly insane.

Lähes huijaamatta, istun ympärivuorokautisesti kirjanladontaluokassa musteiden ja pienten metallikirjasimien kanssa tehden kandiani. Koko prosessiin menee aika valtavasti aikaa, mutta lopputuloksesta näyttäisi tulevan aika mässy. Fonttikoko on 6 (sama kokoasteikko kuin tekstinkäsittelyohjelmissa, jossa times new roman 12 on se basicfontti. Eli puolet pienempi. Yay!), ei helpota, eikä nopeuta hommaa lainkaan.

Kun oon niin innostunut tästä painohommasta, oon ehtinyt jo unohtaa senkin, että tosiaan, tähän prosessiin kuuluu myös sisällöntuontato-osuus. Välillä onni potkii, kun sisältö on pudonnut päästä ulos miltei itsestään.

(Kirjasinten nurinperisyys on aiheuttanut myös innostuksen opetella kirjoittamaan käsin nurinperin. Siitä myöhemmin.)
